If you spend a while around Lord of Life, you will eventually hear about the Annual Pig Roast. This yearly church-wide barbecue and silent auction benefits the Pastor’s Discretionary Fund. (One highly sought-after auction item is the parking space right in front of the church entrance!) There are also other church social events throughout the year that raise money for this fund, which allows the Lord of Life pastoral team to act quickly and with flexibility to deliver financial help to individuals and families in a crisis.
What is the Pastor’s Discretionary Fund?
If you’ve experienced a financial crisis, you know how quickly it can arise. Many families don’t have enough funds set aside to cover job loss, medical expenses, car trouble, or rent increases. A 2015 Pew study found that the typical U.S. household didn’t have one month’s income in savings, and 41% respondents said they wouldn’t be able to cover a $2000 calamity—the typical cost of an emergency. In a 2019 Federal Reserve survey, 17% of adults said they weren’t able to cover all their bills in any given month. For many of us, a sudden lay-off, ER visit, car accident, fire, or natural disaster can put us on the edge of financial instability, where even small additional expenses can create a catastrophic situation.
This is why the Pastor’s Discretionary Fund at Lord of Life exists. Through generous contributions from the Lord of Life community, we are able to support individuals and families through difficult times. It could be something as small as a gas card to get back on the road to a doctor’s appointment, job opportunity, or safe network. It could be assistance with utilities or partnering with Interfaith of The Woodlands and other churches to cover rent. In the wake of natural disasters, we’ve also used these funds to purchase supplies to help clean out people’s homes and feed volunteers.
The goal of the Pastor’s Discretionary Fund is to provide temporary relief and work towards long-term stability. Your gift makes it possible for Lord of Life to respond immediately to the needs of the community.
